O'Grady was born in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She appeared as a model in commercials for a time prior to moving in Los Angeles. The first role she had was to model as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular character on ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
