O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. She was able to advance into the top 100 rounds due to the fact that judges were awed with her performances. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she was a victim of significant loss in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and the bottom two spots, respectively. The judges were shocked at this, and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he did not fall into the bottom 3. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner reportedly forecast that morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
